AGE: Pianists ages 13 through 17

LOCATION: Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, USA

COMPETITION PIANOS: Steinway & Sons graciously provides the grand pianos for the Competition and its related events. The Steinway grand piano Model D will be available to the 2015 competitors for action testing on March 8 at the competition venue.

COMPETITION ROUNDS: The 2015 Hilton Head International Piano Competition for Young Artists will consist of three rounds of competition. Rounds I and II give each of the competitors a total of 55 minutes of solo recital performance time; there is no elimination between Rounds I and II. Round III is the Finals round in which 5 finalists perform one or two movements of a concerto selected from the approved list, with the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra.

COMPETITOR SELECTION JURY: The Competitor Selection Jury will evaluate, without discussion, all video audition files on the basis of commonly accepted musical criteria and will review each applicant’s Curriculum Vitae in its entirety. The Jury will then select twenty (20) competitors to compete in the 2015 Hilton Head International Piano Competition for Young Artists. The jury will also provide the competition administration with a list of alternates. The Jury’s decision is final.

CHAPERONES: Competitors under the age of 15 in the Hilton Head International Piano Competition for Young Artists must be accompanied by a chaperone. Competitors 15 to 17 years of age may choose to be accompanied a chaperone; however, any competitor 15-17 who elects to come without a chaperone must have his/her parent or guardian sign a waiver which will be provided by the Competition office.

AIR TRANSPORTATION: The Competition will reimburse up to $500 in travel costs for each of the twenty (20) competitors. A competitor may (1) book his/her own flights, purchase his/her own ticket and will then receive, before departure from the Competition, a check up to $500 toward the price of his/her ticket, or (2) book his/her flights through the Hilton Head Island travel agency in cooperation with the Competition; HHIPCYA will then pay up to $500 directly to the agency and the balance of the ticket will be the Competitor’s financial responsibility. Any change in flights after booking and all resulting penalties will be the financial responsibility of the competitor. Any chaperone accompanying a competitor will be responsible for his/her own travel expenses.

HOST FAMILY ACCOMMODATIONS: From arrival March 6 or 7 to departure March 15, each competitor and any accompanying chaperone stay in the home of a Host Family. Each competitor is paired with a Host Family who provides lodging, a grand piano, food and all transportation for the competitor (and his/her chaperone) from March 6 through March 15, 2015. Competitors and chaperones will be responsible for their own lodging, food and transportation on any days falling outside the period of March 6 – 15, 2015.

ALL SELECTED COMPETITORS are required to provide proof of a valid visa (for non-US citizens) and medical insurance upon acceptance to the 2015 HHIPCYA.  Proof of visa is also required for any accompanying chaperone when applicable.

COMPETITOR ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE DATES: All competitors (and any accompanying chaperones) are expected to arrive on Friday, March 6 or Saturday, March 7 and to remain until Sunday, March 15. Competitors who are not participating in Round III are not required to stay until the end of the competition, although they are strongly encouraged to remain for the Master Classes and to be recognized at the Awards Ceremony at the Finals. If a competitor chooses to leave before the end of the Competition, as stated above, the change of departure date and flights and the resulting travel expenses will be the financial responsibility of the competitor.  Any accompanying chaperone will be responsible for all his/her travel expenses.
