Hans-Derek Yu is from Egg Harbor Township, NJ. He began studying piano at the age of five and has been a student of Professor Veda Zuponcic of Rowan University since age seven. Competing nationally and internationally, Hans has won first prize in numerous piano competitions including the Princeton Steinway Society Competition, the NJMTA Young Artist Competition multiple times, the West Chester University Competition multiple times, the Chopin International Piano Competition in Hartford, and the Osaka International Music Competition piano solo category. In 2017, he won second prize at the MTNA National Finals in Baltimore.

In addition to solo recitals, Hans has also performed with various orchestras as a featured artist. At the age of 10, and again at 12, Hans won the Northern Lights Music Festival Concerto Competition (Minnesota) and performed with the Northern Lights Music Festival Orchestra. At the age of 14, Hans performed with the Old York Road Symphony Orchestra. In the same year, he performed with the Bravura Philharmonic Orchestra and recently with the Ocean City Pops (New Jersey). Hans has taken master classes with Gary Graffman, Dang Thai Son, Lydia Artymiw, Douglas Humpherys, and Emanuel Ax.

Aside from piano, Hans enjoys playing ping pong and mathematics. He was selected as a member of the Julian C. Stanley Study of Exceptional Talent of Johns Hopkins University as a result of his outstanding academic achievement.
